Rotary International District 3300 continues the fight against dengue in Malaysia by working with Komuniti Bebas Denggi indengue hotspot areas.
A key aspect of this collaboration is the active participation of Rotary volunteers in KBD’s Dengue Free Squad, a specially formed squads of volunteers, mainly made up of residents. These squads will lead the KBD programme activation in their respective communities.

The teams will implement a 12-week programme which includes eliminating breeding sites through communal clean-up sessions as well as larviciding treatment within their community, together with the local council and health department personnel.

Under this collaboration, Rotary’s volunteers will join the teams, to assist in training as well as take part in clean-up programmes.

The last detected WPV2 dates to 1999, from Aligarh, northern India.

Why is this important? Type 2 polio virus has caused some cases of vaccine-induced polio. Since Type 2 Polio is officially eradicated, it can be removed from Oral Polio Vaccines.

Nigerian leadership supports polio eradication in his country.
By Rotary Voices staff

In September, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari immunized children against polio in his hometown, Daura in Katsina State. In his first months as Nigeria’s leader, Buhari has shown strong support for polio eradication efforts. On 24 July, the country celebrated one year since its last case of polio caused by the wild poliovirus. To mark the milestone, President Buhari publicly immunized his granddaughter against the disease.

Area of Focus: Basic Education and Literacy

4/9/2015

September is the month for Basic Education and Literacy in Rotary.

Consider these facts:
  • If all women completed primary education, there would be 66% fewer maternal deaths.
  • A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past the age of five.
  • If all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty, which would be equivalent to a 12% cut in world poverty.
The world is making good progress in this area. According to a 2014 United Nations Millennium Development Goals progress report, literacy rates among adults and youths are on the rise and the gender gap in literacy is narrowing. But pressing global needs remain:
  • 58 million children worldwide are out of school.
  • Even after four years of primary schooling, as many as 250 million children cannot read and write.
  • 781 million adults are illiterate.
