Rotary & CIMB – Vision 4 Sungai Petani The Rotary & CIMB – Vision 4 Sungai Petani was launched on 8 April 2012 to provide 99 underprivileged patients with free cataract surgery and to ensure they have a successful recovery which will eventually lead them back to their normal lives. The CIMB Foundation approved a Grant of RM49,500.00 for the project. The main beneficiaries from this project are poor and needy patients who cannot afford to pay for the cataract surgery and those whose livelihood or work is affected by the cataract problem. Through this program, it is also anticipated that awareness on cataract & quality eye care would be increased. Deserving patients were identified in the following manner :- • Patients on the Hospital Welfare Department List were given priority in undergoing the cataract surgery. • Patients referred by Ophthalmologists in private practice in Sungai Petani and Rtn. Choo Kai Hong, an optometrist, were directly referred to the Ophthalmology Department of Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim, Sungai Petani for pre-operative assessment. • Patients recommended by Rotarians and other Non-Governmental Organisations were referred to Klinik Kesihatan Sungai Petani to undergo eye screening to determine if they need cataract surgery. • 20% of the patients are people who were unable to work due to cataract and who after the surgery was successfully completed, were able to return to work. After the surgery is completed successfully, the patient would return to the Hospital for a review (on a later date), and upon successfully passing the review, the Ophthalmologist provides an acknowledgement via a letter under the Hospital ‘letter head’ stating the patient is ready to work or go about their everyday activity per normal. The Hospital did not charge for the cataract surgeries with the only cost incurred being RM500.00 for the intraocular lenses per patient. As at 27 March 2013, 95 out of 99 patients have been successfully operated on with the remainder expected to be completed in April 2013. |
